9th St. (2/3 Aves). OyajiLife favorite. Great brunch specials until 3:50 pm, including a mini-don. Sobai is hand-made on site, and the presentation, flavor, all very traditional. Even walking into the restaurant, one cannot escape the feeling of having stepped into a Soba restaurant in Japan.

If you are uncertain of what types of Soba or Udoni you might like, just take a look at the picture menu (with photos of each dish). The selections for both hot/cold soba and udon are very traditional, and also quite comprehensive.

At the end of the year, Sobaya takes pre-orders for "Toshi-koshi Soba" (Soba to bring in the New Year). The traditional way to bring in the new year in Japan, is to do a thorough cleaning of one's house, and eat soba around midnight (around the time most of America tunes into watch the ball fall in Times Square) with family.

They also have delightfully Japanese desserts.
